Unanswered Questions

The main unanswered question in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman is: what did Morpheus think he was doing?

(i) He would have killed Lyta Hall to prevent her from acting as a vehicle for the Furies when they attacked the Dreaming but Larissa, having made a deal with the Furies, drew a protective circle around Lyta.

(ii) He would have remained in the Dreaming to prevent the Furies from gaining possession of it but Nuala called him out of the Dreaming.

(iii) He now had no alternative but to instruct Daniel as his successor and to enter the realm of Death but what had he been preparing Daniel for on the assumption that this was not going to become necessary?

Morpheus had said that a child gestated in the Dreaming was his. He hired Loki and the Puck to kidnap Daniel and to burn away his mortality, then he instructed the Corinthian and Matthew to find Daniel and bring him to the Dreaming so what would Daniel have become if he had not been needed as Morpheus' successor?
